14 Vietnamese scientists are 'Rising Stars' in world rankings

Twitter's global scientist ranking was announced by the Research.com platform on October 7 with total tables, 26 specialized and sub-specialty tables. In the Top 1,000 Best Scientists, Vietnam does not have a representative, however, in many specialized tables and Rising Stars, many faces are recognized.

Accordingly, in the specialized table, in the field of computer science, ranking 2,000 researchers worldwide, the top scientist in Vietnam is Dr. Le Hoang Son at Hanoi National University with d-index 69, ranked 1,947 in the world.

Dr. Le Viet Quoc is the highest-ranked Vietnamese scientist with a d-index of 110. However, the platform recognizes researchers by workplace, Dr. Quoc at Google is ranked 118 in the US and 214 in the world.

Similarly, the case of Vietnamese scientists working abroad also appears in the table of plant science and agronomy. Professor Tran Dang Xuan, Hiroshima University, was recorded with a d-index of 49, ranked 77th in Japan and 2,102nd in the world.

Mechanical and aerospace are the list of highly ranked Vietnamese scientists. Three Vietnamese scientists ranked in the top 350 in the world are Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology ranked 132nd, Dr. Nguyen Thoi Trung at Van Lang University ranked 221st and Dr. Bui Quoc Tinh of Duy Tan University ranked 336th.

Notably, the Rising Stars sub-table, which only ranks scientists with their first publication in the past 12 years, has 14 Vietnamese researchers compared to only 4 in 2024. Of these, 7 work abroad, 7 domestically at Hanoi National University, Duy Tan University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Engineering Technology.

This year, the Vietnamese scientist ranked second in the world in the Rising Science Stars table is Dr. Bui Tien Dieu at Southeastern University of Norway with h-index 116, about 300 works and 33,000 citations. Third place in this table is Dr. Tran Xuan Bach at Hanoi National University with h-index 113, 377 works and more than 189,000 citations.

The table of 1,000 outstanding scientists shows the dominance of the American scientific system. Of the 1,000 ranked scientists, 583 have offices in the US, equivalent to 58.3% of the entire list. Next in the group of countries surveyed here are the UK with 96 people, China with 40 people, Japan with 18 people and France with 17 people.

Research.com classifies countries by a scientist's affiliation, not nationality. Therefore, a scientist who holds the nationality of another country but works at an American university will be counted in the US

From 2022, the Research.com platform conducts global scientist rankings and publishes them once a year. Twitter's 2026 ranking looked at 279,971 profiles and corresponding citation data collected in January. The final ranking is based on the h-index, which represents both research productivity and influence, but does not fully reflect a scientist's contributions.

The education data platform develops the Best Scientists ranking based on the h-index, which combines the number of publications and the number of citations. For example, a researcher with an h-index (number of articles and citations) of 50 will have 50 publications that received at least 50 citations. In specialized tables, the index used for ranking is d-index, similar to h-index but only counts works in the field under consideration.
