4 iPhone models may be discontinued when iPhone 18 Pro Max launches

(Dan Tri) - The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max duo will likely be discontinued after Apple introduces the new iPhone. In addition, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus may also suffer the same fate.

At 10 a.m. September 9 (Pacific time), or 0:00 September 10 (Vietnam time), Apple will hold the "Surprise and shine" event to introduce a series of new devices. Here, the company will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max duo and its first folding screen iPhone.

Besides launching new products, Apple will likely also discontinue some older devices. This is considered a familiar business strategy that the company has applied for many years.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, a representative of an Apple authorized retail system (AAR) said that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max duo are almost certainly on the death list.

"According to market practice and based on the history of previous product generations, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max duo are almost certainly on the death list. Meanwhile, some versions of the standard line will continue to be maintained depending on Apple's distribution policy and product portfolio," this person shared.

Meanwhile, 9to5mac predicts that Apple may discontinue two more iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models, in addition to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, just because a model is discontinued does not mean that device will immediately disappear from the market.

Depending on each product line, Apple can still maintain business operations in certain markets. For example, the iPhone 15 was launched in 2023 and has been discontinued, but until now Apple still distributes this product line through its authorized dealers in Vietnam.

In fact, the strategy of eliminating old products is considered appropriate, helping Apple "clean up" the product range on the market. Keeping too many models can make it difficult for users to choose.

Furthermore, if older models continue to be sold at lower prices, they could become direct competitors to newly launched iPhones.
