4/8 fiber optic cable lines had problems, Vietnam's Internet going internationally was affected
(Dan Tri) - 4 out of 8 undersea fiber optic cable lines connecting Vietnam to the international market are having problems, which has significantly affected the Internet speed of domestic users.
As Dan Tri reported, two undersea fiber optic cables SJC2 and AAE-1 encountered problems almost simultaneously, causing Internet traffic through these two cables to seriously decrease.
Recently, a representative of an Internet service provider in Vietnam said that two other fiber optic cable lines, AAG and IA, also had problems, affecting Internet connections from Vietnam to international.
It is expected that it will not be until early September that the IA fiber optic cable line will begin to be repaired, while the remaining 3 fiber optic cable lines still do not have an expected time to complete the problem.

The fact that up to 4/8 undersea fiber optic cable lines connecting Vietnam to the international market are having problems has seriously affected Internet connection traffic from Vietnam to the international market. Users in Vietnam will have difficulty accessing websites and services with servers located abroad.
Meanwhile, problems encountered on fiber optic cable lines will not affect websites and server services in Vietnam.
After the incident occurred with undersea fiber optic cables, network operators in Vietnam have applied many plans to share traffic between internationally connected fiber optic lines, open additional access channels, take advantage of land fiber optic lines... to ensure user connection.
In fact, incidents encountered on undersea fiber optic cables from Vietnam to international ones have become very familiar in recent times, and are encountered almost every year at least a few times, causing many difficulties and inconveniences for domestic Internet users.
In February 2023, all 5 undersea fiber optic cable lines connecting Vietnam to the world simultaneously encountered problems, seriously affecting the quality of Internet services in Vietnam.
In addition to undersea fiber optic cable routes, there are currently still a number of land fiber optic cable routes connecting Vietnam to the international market.
Network operators in Vietnam are also looking for solutions to redirect the exploitation of fiber optic cable routes on land so as not to be affected by submarine fiber optic cable breakage incidents. However, in reality, Internet traffic in Vietnam in particular and globally still depends mainly on undersea fiber optic cables.
Currently, there are 8 undersea fiber optic cable routes connecting Vietnam internationally, including AAG (Asia - America); APG (Asia-Pacific); SMW-3 (Southeast Asia - Middle East - Western Europe); IA (Pan-Asian), AAE-1 (Asia - Africa - Europe); TVH connects Hong Kong (China) with Thailand and Vietnam; SJC2 (Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2) and ADC (Asia Direct Cable) connect Vietnam, China, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Japan.
Among them, TVH (Thailand - Vietnam - Hong Kong) is an old fiber optic cable line, exploited since 1996 with very low traffic. The two new fiber optic cable lines ADC and SJC2 will be put into operation from the end of 2024 and mid-2025.
