Apple tests Chinese CXMT memory chips, Tim Cook directly lobbies

According to a new report from the Financial Times, Apple is conducting technical testing of DRAM memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) from China. Although a commercial contract has not yet been finalized, this test step helps Apple be ready to introduce CXMT into the supply chain as soon as the US government approves it. CXMT is currently the world's 4th largest DRAM manufacturer, holding about 11% of global capacity. The move comes amid a 55% to 60% spike in DRAM prices in early 2026 driven by AI server demand. The addition of CXMT alongside Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron will help Apple increase price negotiation power and be proactive in supply. CEO Tim Cook even directly persuaded US officials to be allowed to use his own CXMT chip for devices sold in the Chinese market. However, because CXMT is on the US Department of Defense's list of military links, Apple's cooperation plan is still facing many political barriers in Washington.
