What is the USB port with the battery icon used for?
On some laptops, the battery icon is used to identify a port that supports device charging even when the device is in a low power state or turned off.
Lenovo calls this feature Always On USB. According to the company's documentation, supported ports can continue to supply power to the device when it is on or in sleep mode; On some models, this function also works when the device is in hibernation mode or turned off but still connected to the power source.

Dell also uses a lightning bolt or battery icon to identify ports that support USB PowerShare. This feature allows using the laptop's battery to power a USB device. Depending on the model and BIOS settings, PowerShare may operate when the device is in a low power state or turned off.
Therefore, you should not understand that just seeing the battery icon means that the USB port will definitely charge the device when the laptop is completely turned off. Operating status, whether the charger is plugged in, and the minimum battery level to maintain functionality may vary between models.
On some laptops, manufacturers also allow users to set a battery threshold at which the power supply feature to external devices will automatically stop. This helps limit connected devices from draining the laptop's battery.
The battery icon does not mean high charging capacity
Another misconception is that a port with a battery icon will always charge faster than other USB ports. In fact, this symbol mainly indicates the ability to power or charge in special states, and does not directly indicate the maximum capacity of the port.
Capacity depends on the USB standard, the design of the device, and how the manufacturer implemented that port.
With basic USB standards, USB 2.0 has a maximum power of 2.5W, USB 3.x can reach 4.5W and USB Battery Charging 1.2 can reach 7.5W. USB Type-C can essentially deliver up to 15W at 5V/3A if designed to support this level.
USB Type-C can also support USB Power Delivery (USB PD), allowing for much higher power. USB-IF notes that USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery are two separate concepts: a USB-C port can support PD, but not every USB-C port has this feature. With current USB PD implementations, power can go up to 240W.
Therefore, it is impossible to determine the charging capacity based on the battery icon alone. To know exactly how much power the port can provide, users need to look at the device's specifications or documentation.
