In early May, the Government issued a decision on 10 strategic technology groups and 30 strategic technology products that Vietnam prioritizes for development.

At the regular Government Meeting in June, on the morning of July 4, Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan said that after more than two months of implementation, ministries and branches have proposed 28 tasks and the Ministry is evaluating and approving them for early implementation.

At the same time, the Ministry proactively selected 39 strategic technology research tasks within the framework of bilateral cooperation with Russia, Australia, Italy, Japan and a number of other countries.

"The deployment of strategic technologies is being carried out quite synchronously by ministries and branches," Minister Vu Hai Quan said, adding that research and development tasks have been relatively clearly identified and are expected to be deployed strongly in July and August. According to him, this will be the foundation for the development of Vietnam's strategic technology products.

At the regular Government press conference, noon on July 4, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong also said that the 28 proposed tasks of ministries and branches are all "big, new and very difficult problems", but the Ministry will complete the appraisal of the entire content and report to the Prime Minister before July 20.

Among these, the Ministry assesses that some groups of technology problems have a high level of readiness and the ability to create initial products in 2026 such as AI cameras, autonomous mobile robots, UAV products, smart education platforms and a number of vaccine products, biological products, and biotechnology in agriculture. This is a Vietnamese technology group that has some initial results or test samples.

According to the Deputy Minister, strategic technology is a new, difficult field and involves many industries and fields, so it is imperative to have the participation of heads of ministries, branches, ministerial-level agencies and localities. He also emphasized that "strategic technology problems must take commercial efficiency as a measure for strategic products".

He commented that science and technology tasks are often long-term, associated with national autonomy and competitiveness. For highly complex strategic technologies such as satellites, high-speed railways or technologies related to rare earths, a thorough research and development process and a specific roadmap to 2030 are needed.

"We cannot expect all strategic technologies to have specific results in 2026. However, with the determination of all ministries, branches and localities and the drastic direction of the Party and State leaders, I believe that by the end of 2026, Vietnam will initially achieve some specific results in strategic technology development," Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong said.
