Tech billionaires about to have lunch at the White House, looking for ways to 'balance AI'

According to CNN, President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson proposed a meeting and lunch on September 29 (local time) with the participation of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI President Greg Brockman.

Meanwhile, AFP said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will also be present. The White House has not confirmed, but Mr Johnson appeared to signal that the meeting would focus on finding the "right balance" between innovation and some form of oversight.

"We don't need a moratorium, we don't need to intervene and tighten regulations too much, because then we will lose the race with China," Mr. Johnson told Fox Business Network on September 28.

According to France24, the meeting of technology billionaires at the White House took place when leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta all recorded that their models began to operate out of control. Reuters reported on September 29 that OpenAI has postponed the announcement of the GPT-6.1 Astra model due to safety issues. A day earlier, Anthropic's IPO filing also devoted much of its content to warning about the "catastrophic risks" of AI.

However, the meeting, if it takes place, also reflects the deepening divisions in Washington. While many companies like OpenAI, Anthropic or Google want to slow down AI, President Trump considers the concern "the latest hoax". Some sources said that, through the advice of Jensen Huang and former advisor David Sacks, the US leader is encouraging the development of unlimited artificial intelligence to surpass China, as well as promote economic growth based on AI.

In the context of more and more cases of "rebellious" agents being recorded, on the same day September 29, 22 researchers at OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Meta and leading industry experts such as Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio issued a warning that the AI explosion could "cause the weakening or extinction of humanity". The group recommends that policymakers should urgently introduce laws requiring businesses developing artificial intelligence to be more transparent about the level of automation in the model development process.

Previously, on July 27, more than 1,000 people working at leading US AI companies, including CEO Anthropic Amodei, signed a petition, calling on the government to limit the rate of release of the most modern models, and at the same time proposed that the US "support international efforts to develop technical and operating tools to monitor and control the speed of development of automatic AI systems".
