China Pushes Back the Desert With Billions of Dollars and AI

China is reporting major progress in its decades-long fight against desertification. Since 2023, the country has channeled roughly $13.06 billion into completing 544 anti-desertification projects and restoring more than 16.27 million hectares of land. As a result, the area classified as desertified is now shrinking by about 667,000 hectares each year.

The campaign centers on the Three Northern region, which spans 4.486 million square kilometers, or nearly half of China's territory. Vegetation coverage there has reached 40.76%, and 67.82% of degraded land has now been treated. Soil erosion across the country's major deserts has also dropped by around 40% compared with 2000.

Giant Sand-Blocking Belts

A series of large-scale works has reshaped the arid landscape. In the Hexi Corridor, 1,482 kilometers of sand barriers have been built to halt drifting sand. Around the Taklamakan, a 3,046-kilometer forest belt has been closed into a complete green shield encircling one of the world's harshest deserts.

More than 16.27 million hectares restored in just a few years, backed by $13.06 billion in investment since 2023.

What sets this phase apart is the use of advanced technology in planting and land rehabilitation. China runs 18 experimental sites built around an AI model called Smart Sand, paired with basalt fiber, blue algae crusts, and satellite-guided planting robots.

These new materials and methods are expected to lift restoration efficiency by about 50% while cutting costs by roughly 30%. The shift signals that the battle against desertification is moving from sheer manpower toward data-driven, technology-led solutions.
