Detailed Review: Sony Xperia 1 VII
I have had a period of time using the Sony Although Sony Xperia 1 VIII was launched in May 2026, I am confident that many users and especially loyal Sony Fans will continue to be interested in Xperia 1 VII. Detailed Product Evaluation at this time still has a very unique logic.
Design, grip feel
Particularly regarding the design of the Sony Xperia 1 VII, I can be confident about the product's very high finishing standards. I can immediately recognize this in the frame and back of the device. Combined with that are many features only found on Sony smartphones. Not to mention, Xperia 1 VII also possesses a design style that many people would call "conservative" but many people also expressed "regret" right after the successor to Xperia 1 VIII was released.

For me, the design of the Sony Xperia 1 VII has a very unique beauty. Overall, the front of the Sony Xperia 1 VII is still a 6.5-inch screen design with the top and bottom borders being evenly symmetrical. This is a defect-free screen design (no perforated notch) that is very typical on all Sony Xperia smartphones.

Just looking at the screen design, I can immediately recognize that this is a Sony smartphone. I like the 19.5:9 screen ratio of the Xperia 1 VII because I am familiar with its predecessor, the Xperia 1 VI, which has a similar screen ratio. To share a bit, the 19.5:9 ratio makes the smartphone's appearance wider horizontally, completely different from the 21:9 ratio with the elongated design of previous generations of Xperia 1 Series.

It didn't take me long to get used to the experience of using and viewing content on the 19.5:9 screen of the Xperia 1 VII (left). Anyway, I used to use its predecessor Xperia 1 VI (on the right). Although the 21:9 ratio on the Xperia 1 V and earlier provides a more comfortable grip, it displays two large black bands when I watch videos on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook Reel. Meanwhile, Xperia 1 VI and 1 VII with 19.5:9 screen ratio display smaller black bars.

When watching horizontal video on the 19.5:9 screen of the Xperia 1 VII (left), the device does not display black bars with too large a size like the Xperia 1 V (right). Right from the first time I held and set up the Sony Xperia 1 VII, a strange feeling suddenly emerged in me and urged me to immediately order tempered glass and a case for the device. Maybe because I can't bear to see the device get scratched during use, keeping the original beauty of the device intact.

I did not hesitate to immediately buy tempered glass accessories and back covers for Sony Xperia 1 VII even though... I am not the real owner of the device.

The frame of the Sony Xperia 1 VII has meticulously machined metal grooves.

The glass back with embossed polka dots is the detail I like most in the design of the Xperia 1 VII. I want to talk more about the main camera cluster of the Sony Xperia 1 VII because this is the last generation in the Xperia 1 Series that still retains the elliptical camera cluster design with 3 lenses in a row. When the successor to the Xperia 1 VIII was launched, this flagship model changed the design of the main camera cluster with a square shape with one edge connecting the chassis and curved two corners.

The design of the main camera cluster of Sony Xperia 1 VIII (left) has undergone a transformation compared to its predecessor Xperia 1 VII (right). Source: Sony. Of course, the change in the camera system design of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII has created many different opinions from users. For me, the design of the main camera cluster on Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VIII has its own beauty. Because I'm a greedy person, of course I want to choose both devices, of course... if my financial condition is good.

Sony Xperia 1 VIII and Xperia 1 VII are not only valuable for use but also valuable for collecting in the future. Besides the details in the design of the Sony Xperia 1 VII that I have described, this flagship model still has many typical elements of the Xperia 1 Series flagship line such as a physical camera button on the right edge with embossed patterns, a SIM tray that can be removed with one finger to help users easily change the SIM, insert a micro SD memory card when needed and especially a 3.5mm audio port for music listening needs.

Details such as the physical camera button and 3.5 mm audio port have appeared on the Sony Xperia XZ Premium (2017). After more than 8 years, this is still maintained by Sony on Xperia 1 VII (2025). Speaking of enjoying music, I really like using Sony headphones with the Xperia 1 VII smartphone because I feel like the sound quality is somewhat better than other phones I use in parallel. It's really difficult to describe in words, but that's my true feeling, whether using Sony MDR-XB75AP wired headphones at a common price or high-value wireless headphones like Sony WF-1000XM6 and Sony WH-1000XM6. Maybe that's why I really like the experience of using products in the Sony ecosystem synchronously.

Of course, liking to use Sony headphones with Xperia smartphones is just my personal experience and this may not be true for many of you.
Photo quality, camera interface
Continuing with the design, I will share about the camera system and the quality of photos taken from the Sony Xperia 1 VII. The manufacturer shares that this flagship is integrated with the technology of the Sony Alpha specialized camera line, ensuring the color and tone of the image are more similar to a professional camera than a smartphone. Sony Xperia 1 VII also comes with many AI features to support video recording such as: AI Camerawork Mode, Auto Framing Mode, AI filming,...

Sony shares that the camera system on the Xperia 1 VII uses many technologies from the Alpha camera line. Source: Sony. Quick points about camera parameters of Sony Xperia 1 VII:
- Main camera: Exmor T sensor 1/1.35 inch, 52 MP (effective 48 MP) f/1.9, focal length 24 mm, field of view 84 degrees. - Telephoto camera: 1/3.5 inch Exmor RS sensor, 12 MP f/2.3 (85 mm) - f/3.5 (170 mm), focal length 85 mm - 170 mm, field of view 28 degrees (85 mm) - 15 degrees (170 mm). - Ultra wide-angle camera: 1/1.56 inch Exmor RS sensor, 50 MP f/2.0 (48 MP effective, 12 MP still photography), 16 mm focal length, 104 degree field of view.

Xperia 1 VII has a 3-camera system all using Exmor RS sensors developed by Sony. For me, photos taken with enough light in automatic mode from the Sony Xperia 1 VII camera have a clear level of detail and realistic colors instead of flattering. I also want to note that the image quality from the device's camera may not be suitable for those who like to take photos in the "one click and it's ready to use" format (or in other words, instant noodle photography). According to the information I consulted from everyone in the Sony Fans Vietnam group, if you clearly understand how to take photos and adjust parameters in "Pro Photo" mode, then you will be able to take advantage of the camera strengths of the Sony Xperia 1 VII in particular and other Xperia flagship models in general.

These are the photos I took with the Sony Xperia 1 VII in automatic mode with bright enough conditions. I also like the way the Sony Xperia 1 VII camera handles photos taken in low light or indoor lighting conditions. More specifically, the picture is not brightened too high and the colors are close to what my eyes actually see.

Photos taken in low light, indoor lighting conditions from the Sony Xperia 1 VII camera. Of course I took the photo in automatic mode. Regarding the video recording of the Sony Xperia 1 VII, I have nothing to criticize, if not very satisfied. I mainly use the device to record product review videos, and the finished product comes out beautiful with clear details and no wrong colors. In particular, the device does not experience overheating and automatically stops the camera application even when I record for more than 1 hour outdoors.
This is a segment I filmed on Xiaomi 17 with the Sony Xperia 1 VII camera. Talking about camera software, Sony Xperia 1 VII still uses a single application called "Camera" similar to its predecessor Xperia 1 VI and different from previous generations of Xperia 1 V which had all 3 applications (Photo Pro, Video Pro, Cinema Pro).

For me, the camera application interface on Sony Xperia 1 VII is not too difficult to get used to and use. The camera application interface on Xperia 1 VII is designed by Sony to be intuitive, helping users not take much time to get used to and use. Camera settings, shooting functions (timer, focus adjustment, image ratio, flash,...) are all brought down near the bottom of the screen so I can easily take photos/record videos with one hand.
Performance evaluation
Sony Xperia 1 VII is the flagship in 2025, so of course the device's hardware configuration will still be very strong in 2026 and even in the upcoming 2027. Quick review of the device's configuration parameters:
- Main camera: Exmor T sensor 1/1.35 inch, 52 MP (effective 48 MP) f/1.9, focal length 24 mm, field of view 84 degrees. - Telephoto camera: 1/3.5 inch Exmor RS sensor, 12 MP f/2.3 (85 mm) - f/3.5 (170 mm), focal length 85 mm - 170 mm, field of view 28 degrees (85 mm) - 15 degrees (170 mm). - Ultra wide-angle camera: 1/1.56 inch Exmor RS sensor, 50 MP f/2.0 (48 MP effective, 12 MP still photography), 16 mm focal length, 104 degree field of view.

Of course, we need performance score and game FPS data to have a more general perspective on the power of the Android flagship. Therefore, I evaluated the performance of Sony Xperia 1 VII with two parts including:
Performance scoring
The conditions for me to score the performance of Sony Xperia 1 VII are as follows:
Performance score comparison table between Sony Xperia 1 VII (Android 16) VS Sony Xperia 1 VI (Android 14)

I want to note that the above results table is for reference only because the Xperia 1 VII is on Android version 16, while at the time I used its predecessor, the Xperia 1 VI, the device was running Android 14. Based on the results table, the CPU performance score of Sony Xperia 1 VII is on average ~15 - 20% higher than its predecessor Xperia 1 VI. Particularly in the case of single-core/multi-core performance scores in GeekBench 6, the Xperia 1 VI's score is ~15% higher than its successor. Regarding the GPU performance score results, I found that the more severe the test, the greater the difference between Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VI. Specifically:
Realistic gaming experience

The items I enabled in the Game Enhancer tool such as screen refresh rate, touch response speed, touch adjustment speed,... Graphics settings of 7 games I played on Sony Xperia 1 VII

Table of FPS measurement results for 7 games I played on Sony Xperia 1 VII

Overview of the gaming performance of the Sony This is completely normal for Android flagships.

Sony Xperia 1 VII plays MOBA and shooting games smoothly. Since playing the remaining 3 games Honkai: Star Rail, Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves - which are games with heavier graphics than the first 4 games, Xperia 1 VII has experienced more lag and the FPS path is always fluctuating. It's not too difficult to understand when I tested 7 games continuously on Xperia 1 VII and made the device operate at high intensity.

While testing the game Xperia 1 VII, I found that the device would jerk a lot when playing Wuthering Waves. Regarding the temperature factor, I found that the Sony Xperia 1 VII was only warm on the back and frame when I played Lien Quan, Wild Rift, PUBG Mobile and Delta Force. The feeling of holding the device at that time was not too uncomfortable. When I play Honkai, Genshin and WuWa, the temperature of the Sony Xperia 1 VII will increase quickly and make my hands uncomfortable when holding the device. Of course, if I simply play a game for 20 - 30 minutes (even with max graphics settings), the Sony Xperia 1 VII brings a different experience than the results in the Game Measurement video I once made.
Battery life
Although the Sony Xperia 1 VII only has a battery capacity of 5,000 mAh, the device has the ability to optimize power consumption and battery life, making me have to "keep my eyes open". To give you an overview of the Sony Xperia 1 VII's battery life, I tested the battery in 2 parts including:

Sony confidently shares that their flagship has a battery life of up to 2 days. Source: Sony.
Battery Test: Sony Xperia 1 VII with 4 rotating actual usage tasks (from 100% to 0%)
Battery Test Results: Sony Xperia 1 VII

Battery Test Results: Sony Xperia 1 VII - Android 16. The detailed battery life measurement table shows that the Sony Xperia 1 VII can operate continuously for 12 hours:

I tested the battery: Sony Xperia 1 VI and put the results below so you can have more data to compare with the successor Xperia 1 VII. A small note is that at the time I tested the battery, the Xperia 1 VI was at Android version 14 (currently the device may have upgraded to Android 16).

Battery Test Results: Sony Xperia 1 VI - Android 14. After Testing the Battery: Sony I see that 3 tasks related to the YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok applications all consume no more than 10% of the battery (each task lasts for 1 hour and rotates). This partly proves that the Xperia 1 VII does not drain the battery quickly for daily tasks and I also see the same thing when actually using the device. Playing the Lien Quan Mobile game for 1 hour of course causes the Sony Xperia 1 VII to drain the battery faster, on average >10%. This is a normal consumption level based on my experience testing smartphone batteries.

The daily tasks I use on the Sony Xperia 1 VII do not cause the device to drain the battery too quickly. According to my practical experience, Xperia 1 VII can meet my usage needs for 1 day, including standby time. The tasks I use include: Making calls, texting, reading news, surfing social networks, watching videos, playing Wuthering Waves game continuously for 20 - 30 minutes. Besides, I also turn on the mobile network continuously to broadcast Wi-Fi network to other devices, receive notifications from OTT/social network applications, turn on location services and connect Bluetooth to the headset. On days when I don't play WuWa game on Xperia 1 VII, the battery lasts for more than 1 day.
Measure the time it takes to fully charge the battery (from 0% to 100%)
For the test of measuring the time to fully charge the Xperia 1 VII battery (from 0% to 100%), I used a Mophie Speedport 120 W charger, 4 GaN ports and a Mophie USB-C 100 W charging cord. Besides, I also used the Mophie 2in1 Stand Plus charging dock, which I also used to measure the wireless charging time for the device.

These are the accessories I used to perform the test to measure the time it takes to fully charge the Xperia 1 VII battery. Below are the conditions in the test to measure the time it takes to fully charge the Sony Xperia 1 VII battery:
Specific results are as follows: Mophie USB-C 100 W charging cable and Mophie Speedport 120 W charger, 4 GaN ports: 1 hour 23 minutes

Mophie 2in1 Stand Plus wireless charging dock: 3 hours 6 minutes

The time to fully charge the Xperia 1 VII's battery via the wireless charging dock is really long, perhaps because the device only supports wireless charging with a maximum capacity of 15 W. In fact, I rarely use wireless charging because then the device temperature will increase and affect the internal components. I always prioritize the wire charging solution for the device, anyway the waiting time is not too long.
Experience the software
In this section, I will share about the experience of using software on Sony Xperia 1 VII. The device is integrated with the Android 16 operating system with an almost pure Android interface and little customization. This makes the motion effects when I swipe to open the notification bar, multitask, swipe from the left / right edge back, open and close applications,... all happen very smoothly and the device rarely lags.

The Sony Xperia 1 VII offers a smooth user experience largely thanks to its minimally customizable Android interface. Another plus point is that the Sony Xperia 1 VII received many software updates throughout the time I used the device. I saw the device reporting at least 4 software versions with capacities ranging from ~100 - 600 MB.

This is a list of software updates throughout my time using Xperia 1 VII. To share more with you, I am part of the Sony Fans Vietnam group and really enjoy reading posts from Mr. Long Nguyen and many other admins and members. They are people who are very passionate about technology and knowledgeable about Sony products. Following them also helps me learn more interesting information. Returning to the Xperia 1 VII, perhaps not only me but Mr. Long Nguyen also admitted that the almost pure Android interface on the device looks unbeautiful and boring. Most likely the reason comes from the fact that Sony does not have a team specializing in interface design on Xperia smartphones.

Although the Sony Xperia 1 VII offers a smooth user experience, the interface is... a bit boring. Xperia 1 VII is also Sony's first flagship equipped with Xperia Intelligence artificial intelligence technology. According to Sony, this is AI technology developed using their specialized equipment. The 3 core elements of Xperia Intelligence include: Camera AI, Audio AI, Display AI to enhance the real-time recording and audio-visual experience.
As a reminder, this is a video introducing Xperia Intelligence integrated into the Sony Xperia 1 VII. Source: Sony. However, while using the device, I had difficulty realizing the presence of Xperia Intelligence. Admin Long shared that AI on Sony smartphones mainly appears in BRAVIA display optimization, WALKMAN sound technology, Alpha camera,... and users will probably rarely notice and realize it. I also recognize the two functions Auto Framing & AI Camerawork video but rarely use them. If you are interested, Mr. Hiep once wrote an article sharing his experience using these functions.
Xperia 1 Mark VII: Auto Framing: shoots 2 very good 4K horizontal and FullHD vertical videos at once When filming with this feature, you get a normal 4K movie and a vertical movie with the frame automatically following the FullHD character. This feature is very useful for people filming themselves. You will always have 2 sources and not be afraid of them falling out of the frame... Tinhte.vn Actually, Sony Xperia 1 VII still has AI functions suitable for many common users. More specifically, the Circle to Search feature circles the search for information on the screen, chats on all topics with AI assistant Gemini, and the Magic Editor tool edits photos with AI in Google Photos. However, the AI features on Sony Xperia 1 VII are still inferior in quantity and quality compared to many other smartphone brands on the market that I can quickly list as Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, HONOR. But it's okay, if you fall in love then just close your eyes and let it go. After all, there are so many AI features that you probably won't use them all... But something is better than nothing! So what do you think about the Sony Xperia 1 VII? Please share your thoughts in the comments section at the end of the article! Thank you for your interest and following the article. See more:
