FPT and Mila Institute of Artificial Intelligence cooperate in advanced AI research
The relationship between the two sides was established in 2020, when FPT became the first strategic partner of Mila (Canada) in Southeast Asia in researching and promoting responsible AI initiatives.
At the cooperation signing ceremony on the afternoon of August 13 in Hanoi, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Phong, FPT AI Transformation Director, said that after 6 years, the two sides have published 162 scientific works, of which 126 were published at the world's leading conferences and magazines. The results of the cooperation also include the training of 80 young researchers, along with 5 accepted patents.
In the coming time, the two sides will expand research into advanced AI fields such as platform modeling, agent AI, physical AI and AI serving network safety and security problems. FPT and Mila will also increase researcher exchange, training and knowledge transfer, aiming to develop technologies with high scientific value and applicability, and apply research results to solve practical problems.
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phong, Vietnam needs to master technology and train world-class scientists if it wants to rise in the AI era. He expects this partnership will create "hundreds, thousands of people to research basic science" and apply AI to solve major problems of the country and businesses.
At the event, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung assessed that the cooperation between FPT and Mila is consistent with Vietnam's AI development orientation, contributing to solving major problems, helping Vietnam proactively participate in the value chain and shape global AI governance standards.
"All AI technology is only truly valuable when it brings a better life to people and creates development space for businesses," said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He suggested that the two sides take practical products as the final measure, moving from pure research to creating specific results, from core technology, inventions to commercialized solutions. Topics need to come from the needs of the market, businesses and society.
He also said that "high-quality human resources are the decisive nucleus" and suggested promoting training and developing a team of highly qualified AI experts and engineers, empowering and opening space for young Vietnamese scientists to participate in global research projects and programs, directly solving practical problems.
The Deputy Prime Minister hopes that FPT and Mila will be the pioneers in contributing and shaping the governance framework and AI standards that are both standard according to international practices and consistent with Vietnam's reality. The two sides also need to expand the cooperation ecosystem in the direction of diversification, promoting the "three-party" linkage model: the state, research institutes, and businesses.
Mila is an AI research institute based in Quebec (Canada), founded in 1993 by Professor Yoshua Bengio, one of the pioneering researchers in deep learning technology. The institute currently gathers more than 140 professors and is introduced as the world's largest deep learning academic research center.
