Vietnam's Internet entered the world's top 10 for both mobile and fixed for the first time

According to the latest rankings of Ookla, the company behind the SpeedTest measuring tool, the median mobile Internet download speed in Vietnam in July reached 205.58 Mbps, a significant increase compared to 156.48 Mbps the previous month. Thanks to that, Vietnam increased 10 places, from 20th to 10th position in the world. Meanwhile, the upload speed reached 35.93 Mbps.

In fixed broadband networks, Vietnam achieved a median download speed of 307.11 Mbps, down slightly from 307.36 Mbps the previous month, but still increased one place to seventh place in the world.

With this result, Vietnam for the first time is also in the group of 10 countries and territories with the highest mobile and fixed Internet speeds in the world according to Ookla's rankings.

Ookla did not provide an explanation for this sudden increase. However, according to this unit's statistics, Vietnam was the market that witnessed the strongest growth in July, while most other markets remained unchanged. Some markets also witnessed high growth in mobile Internet speed, such as Malaysia increasing four places, to 19th, or New Zealand increasing eight places, to 25th globally.

In March last year, Vietnam also witnessed a sharp increase in the speed and ranking of mobile Internet networks, when Ookla changed its measurement method as well as the increasing popularity of 5G networks. Since September 2024, when the new generation of mobile connections began to be deployed, the Internet speed chart has shown signs of going up after many years of moving sideways.

According to statistics from the i-Speed tool of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam's 5G network speed has shown signs of increasing in recent months, reaching more than 462 Mbps in July.

With fixed broadband Internet, Vietnam has long been in the top 10 in the world, continuously in the group of countries with the highest Internet speeds in Ookla's rankings.

How does Vietnam's Internet speed compare to the world?

According to the July table, the download speed of global mobile Internet reached an average of 109.73 Mbps, while Vietnam reached 205.58 Mbps, almost twice as much. With fixed networks, the global median speed is 127.70 Mbps, less than half of Vietnam's 307.11 Mbps.

However, these are median download speed figures from measurements on Speedtest, which is the median when all measurements are sorted from low to high, rather than the average speed of all measurements. This also means that not all users in Vietnam can achieve this speed. Ookla said the Speedtest Global Index is updated monthly and uses data from the most recent three months.

In the mobile table, the UAE still leads with 663.50 Mbps, while the fixed table is led by Singapore with 451.14 Mbps in July.
