iPhone Air 2 may have 2 cameras: what the leak says, and why many people find it unnecessary

What does the leak say?

In the second half of 2026, two notable sources almost simultaneously confirmed that the second generation iPhone Air will have dual rear cameras instead of a single camera like the original. The first source is Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is considered one of the most reliable journalists on Apple news thanks to his network of internal sources and a string of accurate predictions over the years. According to Gurman, iPhone Air 2 (internal codename V62) will have a wide-angle camera with an ultra-wide-angle lens, launching with the iPhone 18 series in spring 2027 instead of September as usual.

The second source is Jon Prosser, a famous leaker but his reliability is more controversial: he once had information so accurate that Apple had to sue because he suspected he had an illegal internal leak source, but also gave false information. Technology observers still consider Prosser "worth listening to" even though they don't absolutely believe it. The information from Prosser matches Gurman's at its core: dual cameras with a new 48MP ultrawide lens, while the Face ID cluster will be scaled down to make room for the second lens. Regarding the battery, some more detailed leaks (The Shortcut page) give specific numbers: capacity can increase by about 11%, from 3,149mAh to about 3,500mAh. This is an increase that is described as "not groundbreaking" but is enough to improve the usage time, which is criticized for not lasting a day on the current version.

Technically: is dual camera possible

The question is, the protruding camera cluster on the current iPhone Air already contains the A19 Pro chip, so is there still room for a second lens, or does Apple have to redesign the entire board? Data from leaked schematics and analysis by WCCFTech shows that the inside of the original is actually not as "tight" as many people think: only the die part of the A19 Pro chip is in the convex camera cluster, while the rest of the logic board (including other components) is outside the camera cluster, sharing space with the battery in the main body. In other words, the camera bump has never had to accommodate the entire board, so adding a lens doesn't necessarily require "stripping" the chip and RAM out of the cluster as some initially speculated — the limited space is mainly in the surface area for the lens and sensor, not in having to relocate electronic components. This is also the reason why leaks describe the Air 2 as retaining much of the original's design, only changing the camera cluster and minimizing Face ID, instead of redoing the entire chassis. In theory, this is possible within a generation, and it matches what sources are describing.

But do users really need an additional camera?

This is the most important part, and also where technical leaks and actual user expectations can diverge. A survey cited by PhoneArena showed that among those who did not buy the iPhone Air, only about 16% cited the limited camera compared to the price as the factor that prevented them from buying. Notably, this survey also showed that 20% of respondents cited weak battery life as the reason, and 46% thought that the overall product package was not attractive enough compared to the price of 999 USD, meaning the camera was just one of many factors, not the main reason why the device sold slowly. In other words, if just looking at pure numbers, the battery is actually the point where users complain more than the camera. This reinforces the views of many iPhone Air users, including the personal opinions given here: those who choose the iPhone Air from the beginning often accept the trade-off to have a thin and light device, and most of them do not put the camera - especially the ultrawide lens, which is the least used lens in the secondary camera group on the iPhone Pro lines - as the top criterion. Adding an ultrawide lens is therefore more likely a "giveaway" improvement so that the Air 2 will not be criticized for lacking a camera on the spec sheet, rather than a truly urgent need from the majority of users of this product group.

The more practical priorities are a larger speaker and better sound quality, along with a significantly higher battery capacity — two points that directly impact the day-to-day experience much more than an ultra-wide-angle lens that's rarely turned on. The fact that battery leakage only increased by about 11% also shows that Apple seems to be putting more technical resources (and space inside the device) into the camera than the battery, which many Air users may find out of focus.

Conclude

Leaks from two independent and relatively reputable sources (Mark Gurman/Bloomberg and Jon Prosser) agree that the iPhone Air 2 will likely have a dual camera with a new ultrawide lens, launching in spring 2027. Technically, this is possible because the current protruding camera cluster has never had to contain the entire chip board. But looking at actual survey data, the camera is not the biggest reason why users turn away from the iPhone Air — the battery and overall experience are the factors mentioned more. So while the leak seems solid, Apple putting its weight behind a second ultrawide lens instead of investing more heavily in the battery and speakers likely won't solve the problem that most Air users are concerned about.
