When data protection becomes the new criterion of the camera market

From July 1, 2026, new regulations of the Ministry of Public Security on surveillance camera equipment using Internet protocol (IP Camera) officially take effect. This is considered the next step in the process of completing the legal corridor on cybersecurity and personal data protection in Vietnam, in the context that data is increasingly becoming an important asset of the digital economy.

Image data is emerging as a data type of particular interest. Unlike normal information, image data can visually reflect family activities, production and business activities, user behavior as well as many other private information. The popularity of surveillance cameras in homes, stores, offices and factories has caused the amount of image data created every day to increase sharply.

New technical regulations for IP cameras will officially be applied from July 1, 2026, with a focus on basic network security requirements, user data protection, access account management, software updates and handling security vulnerabilities.

Experts say this is an important step forward, showing that cameras are no longer seen simply as consumer electronics devices, but have become a component of the digital infrastructure, where data needs to be protected similar to other information systems.

This change not only affects camera equipment manufacturers and suppliers, but also contributes to reshaping users' product selection criteria. If previously image quality or price were the top factors of concern, now the ability to protect data, ensure information security and control privacy is becoming a criterion that cannot be ignored.

When data protection becomes a competitive advantage

The Vietnamese camera market has grown rapidly thanks to the appearance of a series of low-cost devices. However, along with that come concerns related to security, especially when most data is stored and processed on server systems located outside of Vietnam.

The big question now is not only whether the camera records clearly or not, but also where the data is stored and who is responsible for protecting that data.

According to technology experts, when the new regulations take effect, businesses that own large-scale digital infrastructure, have domestic data centers and have systematic cybersecurity capabilities will have more advantages in meeting new market requirements.

This is also a trend appearing in many countries around the world, as the concept of "data sovereignty" is increasingly emphasized. Users want to know who their data is managed by, where it is located, and how it can be protected against the risks of leaks or cyber attacks.

In the field of surveillance cameras, this is driving a shift from the race for low price to the race for reliability, operational capacity and data protection.

Safety cameras become part of the home digital ecosystem

Camera solutions developed by businesses that own domestic telecommunications and technology infrastructure are receiving more attention from users.

Viettel Home Camera is one of the notable examples. Instead of just focusing on video recording features, this solution is built on Viettel's digital ecosystem with data stored on domestic cloud computing infrastructure, operating on business data centers.

The advantage of this model lies not only in the ability to store and retrieve data stably, but also in the fact that users can benefit from the security, information security and network operation capabilities that Viettel has invested in for many years.

Besides technology and security factors, the market also has promotional programs to motivate users to access higher quality camera solutions.

Currently, Viettel is implementing a program to give away Home Camera to customers who register new or upgrade FTTH fiber optic Internet service according to appropriate packages. This gives users the opportunity to simultaneously access both an Internet connection and a monitoring system in the same ecosystem, significantly reducing initial costs.

The combination of Internet infrastructure, cloud storage and surveillance cameras also reflects the new development trend of the market, when the camera is no longer a single device but gradually becomes part of the home digital infrastructure.
