What are the benefits of applying PPF to a car? Is it worth the money?!

In recent years, PPF has gradually become more popular in the Vietnamese market, both in terms of the number of brands joining and the dealer system. PPF is inherently one of the most "expensive" car beautification items, with packages up to hundreds of millions of dong for a mid-sized sedan - about 2 times higher than repainting the entire car. In exchange for that price, PPF brings completely different values ​​compared to conventional car beautification methods. Most notable is the ability to "self-heal" after light collisions thanks to the highly elastic TPU layer, along with the smooth surface that helps limit harmful agents to the paint layer in complex environmental conditions (rainwater, tree sap...).

The most valuable thing about PPF

I have been observing and thinking about PPF for about 5 years to find what I feel is most valuable in this layer of film - things that are difficult to compare with conventional beauty and care solutions.

1. The gloss layer is durable over time

High-end PPF often comes with a transparent glossy coating, with similar properties to Ceramic: limiting water stagnation, reducing dust and easy to clean. The biggest difference compared to Ceramic coating lies in durability over time. I have actually seen many PPF sets, after 4 years of use, the anti-water effect is almost unchanged compared to the original - although the gloss is not as "peak" as newly coated Ceramic. The first value that this gloss layer brings is the beauty of the paint layer: the car is always shiny, has depth and feels clean. Another important thing that is difficult to see with the naked eye is that it limits the formation of plaque and water residue (calcium deposits) on the surface - thanks to which the car's paint retains its beautiful shine for a longer time.

High-end PPF uses a TPU panel with high elasticity, large deformation amplitude and can return to its original state when affected by heat (heating or sun exposure). Thanks to this ability, you can limit or avoid a series of factors that deteriorate the paint surface during daily use:

High-end PPF is a significant investment, because only high-end lines possess all the above valuable features, and the price is also commensurate with that quality. This is also a financial barrier that makes many car owners consider carefully before spending money on this item. In my personal opinion, for cars where you really care about long-term beauty, this is an investment worth considering. Premium PPF has an average lifespan of 7-10 years; If there are no unexpected incidents, the film can keep the car looking beautiful throughout that period of time, or may degrade slightly over time.

Which PPF to choose?

The PPF market in Vietnam currently has many brands, from quite strange names to very famous brands. To choose the right type of PPF, you first need to clearly determine your budget, then compare it with the features you really want in a PPF set - those are the two factors I think need to be considered first. When choosing a brand, I personally would prioritize looking at the brand's reputation first, then the warranty policy, and finally the brand's dealer chain/distribution system - to know the scale of their investment, as well as the level of convenience when needing maintenance and warranty later. My car is currently stickered with PPF of the 3M brand, clearly this is a big brand in the supporting industry, better known than before for its lines of heat-insulating films for cars, and currently they are also selling PPF-protective films for cars. I applied the 3M 150 Gloss package - this is not 3M's most expensive, high-end line, but the valuable features that I love are all there. With higher-end models, the difference mainly lies in the thickness of the film: thicker films often provide better protection, thanks to the better elasticity of the TPU film.

What's special about PPF 3M?

If you cut across a 3M PPF (Paint Protection Film) sheet, you can see that the structure consists of three layers that work closely together, each layer solving a separate problem - and this is also where the quality gap between PPF lines on the market is created.

These three layers do not work independently: the top coat needs to be soft enough not to crack as the TPU expands with temperature, the TPU needs to be flexible enough to follow curves without cracking, and the glue layer needs to be strong enough to keep everything in place for many years without shrinking — shrinkage and open edges are the most visible signs on cheap films after a period of use. According to officially announced information from 3M, current film lines such as Series 100, 150 Gloss or Pro Series 200 all come with a 10-year warranty policy for material defects such as yellowing, air bubbles or cracking (with specific accompanying conditions). In general, the value that a high-end PPF kit like 3M brings does not lie in an advertising number or a simple gloss coating, but in a combination of materials, construction technology and after-sales policy - three factors that together determine whether your car is truly "beautiful and durable" according to what you have invested in or not.

Construction of PPF paste

One of the key factors that determine the beauty of the PPF layer on the car is definitely the construction stage. This is a difficult problem that I cannot give exact advice for every case; I personally chose the technical team as well as the film from Dai Thong - 3M authorized distributor in Vietnam. The car's painted surface needs to be calibrated and cleaned thoroughly before applying, this is a mandatory step even for new cars. Combined with that, standard pasting techniques ensure that the surface is dust-free, air bubble-free, and that the glued edges are tightly bonded and do not come loose over time - these are all very important factors that directly determine the final result.

I don't have much experience applying PPF, but realize that most films need to be refined after application to achieve the most perfect beauty, rarely beautiful immediately after application.

Conclusion

PPF is a rather expensive piece of equipment for cars, but it solves the extremely difficult problem of car care and beautification. In the past, I often had to polish and calibrate the paint surface periodically because the use process left many scratches, especially stains, causing the gloss of the paint surface to decrease very quickly. What PPF class brings to me is not simply the beauty of the car, but also comfort and confidence because now whether I wipe the car with a dry towel or wash it at non-professional shops, I no longer have to worry about the car being scratched.
