The 2G network will be completely turned off in September

This is the next step in the roadmap to turn off 2G waves in Vietnam to prioritize frequencies for new generations of mobile networks, introduced by the management agency from 2024. Accordingly, the GSM mobile information system, often called the second generation mobile network (2G), will stop operating on September 15, 2026.

Previously, from October 2024, network operators stopped providing services to subscribers using phones that only support 2G, but still maintained a part of the 2G network to serve early 3G and 4G devices that do not support VoLTE (high-quality call audio transmission technology), or used for communication in some areas such as Truong Sa, Hoang Sa, and DK rigs.

In fact, for several months now, network operators have gradually turned off 2G signals in some eligible areas, instead of waiting for the right time. At the same time, frequency band blocks used for the current 2G network such as 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz will also be auctioned, aiming for use in the next generations of mobile networks such as 5G and 6G.

Since two months ago, some major carriers have begun to notify subscribers who need to check their devices and activate VoLTE. This is a technology that allows direct voice calls to be made on the 4G network.

When 2G is still active, some 4G phones without VoLTE can still switch to the 2G network to make calls. When this network is turned off, the ability to switch to 2G is no longer available, causing the device to still be able to access the Internet via 4G but not be able to make regular calls.

To avoid losing contact, the network recommends that 4G phone users check whether the device supports VoLTE and enable this feature if supported. Devices that only support 2G need to be replaced with devices that support new generation mobile networks. Some Vietnamese carriers said they will automatically scan to activate services for users. However, they also recommend that people proactively check or go to stores, points of sale or network support points.

"Depending on each case, customers can change SIMs and access appropriate device support programs to maintain contact," said Viettel network.

2G networks were commercialized in the world in 1991, before being present in Vietnam in 1993, when MobiFone network began operating. After more than 30 years, this generation of mobile networks is considered "mission accomplished".

Stopping 2G aims to free up and reuse frequency resources for new mobile technologies, thereby helping carriers have more resources to develop 5G, 6G and expand coverage quality. In addition to 2G, the 3G network is expected to continue to be discontinued from September 2028.
