An iPhone factory was attacked by a cyber attack

The World Leaks hacker group has posted on the dark web a series of data believed to be related to the component designs and specifications of Apple and Tesla - two major customers of Indian corporation Tata Electronics. According to Reuters, Tata on June 22 confirmed: "A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics discovered a cyber security incident on some of our systems. The response process was activated immediately. The incident did not affect business operations and all operations continued normally."

Some security experts told Reuters that the World Leaks ransomware hacker group is spreading more than 200,000 files with a total capacity of 630 GB from Tata's system.

In there, there is a folder named com.apple.factorydata, which most likely contains Apple's material specifications, along with a 52-page copyright-stamped document detailing the quality testing standards for iPhone board components. Many emails, system logs spanning many years and passport copies of a series of employees, including foreign experts working here, were also found.

Not only Apple, the stolen data warehouse also contains sensitive technical documents from Tesla, such as Highland design drawings, an upgraded version of the Model 3 electric car launched in 2023, the latest production assembly process manual dated May 5, 2025, and a lot of information about components used for the Model Y SUV line.

Cyber security experts said all of the above data has been for sale on the dark web since June 10. World Leaks is a hacker group famous for extortion attacks on businesses. The group's latest big victim was the Nike brand earlier this year. Tata declined to answer whether it had received a ransom demand from the hackers.

Apple and Tesla have not yet commented. However, a source said that Apple representatives are conducting a comprehensive analysis and investigation into the severity of the leak.

This is the next security incident targeting Apple's supply chain, after the attack on Foxconn's factory in the US in May. Tata Electronics is currently one of the company's most important manufacturing partners in its supply chain diversity strategy.
