"Brick" phones can be used after turning off 2G

(Dan Tri) - Stopping the 2G network does not mean that all "brick" phones will be disabled. Users can still choose basic phone models that support 4G and VoLTE for calling and texting.

In Vietnam, the 2G network has been put into operation since 1993. From October 2024, network operators will begin to stop providing services to subscribers using devices that only support 2G, while maintaining a transition period for some older devices.

From September 15, 2G network will be stopped providing according to the roadmap. This makes phones that only support 2G unable to continue using regular mobile service.

However, stopping 2G does not mean that "brick" phones will stop working. Many basic phone models today support 4G and VoLTE, allowing users to continue calling and texting on the 4G network.

Therefore, when buying a "brick" phone at the present time, users need to prioritize checking the ability to support 4G and VoLTE, instead of only caring about the device's design or brand.

These products all support new generation 4G technology and can be used normally after 2G waves are turned off.

Many countries have completed the shutdown of 2G networks: Japan completed it in 2012, Singapore in April 2017 and Korea in 2021. In the US, major carriers in turn stopped 2G, in which AT&T ended the GSM 2G network in 2017, and T-Mobile completed the process of stopping the 2G network in August 2026.
