(Dan Tri) - Vietnam has deployed more than 40,000 5G stations and is accelerating research into 6G technology.

On July 31, at the regular July press conference of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Telecommunications, informed about the results of 5G network deployment and 6G technology research progress in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Cuong, by early 2026, domestic telecommunications businesses have deployed more than 40,000 5G stations, covering about 92% of the population.

"Although Vietnam is not in the group of countries deploying 5G earliest, the network development speed is considered to be among the fastest in the world. This result demonstrates the technological capacity of Vietnamese telecommunications businesses in mastering, deploying and optimizing the 5G network," Mr. Nguyen Anh Cuong informed at the press conference.

In addition, telecommunications businesses in Vietnam have succeeded in mastering, producing, and commercializing 5G devices according to international standards. There are currently about 2,500 stations using equipment researched and produced by Vietnamese enterprises, equivalent to about 6%.

Telecommunications businesses are aiming to continue to increase the proportion of domestically produced equipment on the 5G network.

Referring to the 6G technology research process, the Telecommunications Department said that the telecommunications field has a specific nature and cannot be researched individually in each country but requires international coordination in the process of research, development and standardization of technology.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has established a 6G Steering Committee, including telecommunications and frequency management agencies, technology enterprises and universities to proactively research 6G network technology; create conditions for businesses, training and research institutions to access 6G technology early, participate in research, contribute to the process of building 6G standards, and proactively choose deployment plans suitable to Vietnam's conditions.

Vietnam needs more than 8 years since 4G was standardized to be able to produce and own the device. For 5G technology, this time has been shortened to nearly 2 years. With previous experience, Vietnam can expect to continue shortening the research time and soon master 6G technology.

In recent times, the telecommunications sector has continued to maintain positive growth momentum. Currently, Vietnam's mobile broadband speed reaches 210.85 Mbps, ranking 9th in the world; IPv6 usage rate reached 67%, ranking 2nd in Southeast Asia.
