Experience JBL Xtreme 5: Improved new light strip, clean sound quality and super durability

The need to find a portable speaker loud enough to listen to music while working at home comes from the fact that I often get stuffy ears when wearing headphones continuously for many hours. I want to have a device that serves well in the corner of my desk, but is also easy to bring out to the balcony to get some fresh air or hang it in the car to take everywhere. Just when I was searching, JBL Xtreme 5 appeared.
Basically, this speaker is the successor of the Xtreme 4 with some tweaks to the internal speaker structure, increased output power and integrated smart processing features using AI technology. I decided to try this speaker as my main music playback device over the past few weeks to see if the new upgrades from the manufacturer really make a noticeable difference and meet practical daily use needs.
Design and feel: Big, sleeveless and new Edge Light strip
When I first opened the box and held the product in my hand, my first feeling was that the speaker was quite big and compact. With specific dimensions of 346 x 165 x 155 mm and a weight of 2.9 kg, this speaker feels extremely solid, even a bit heavier than its predecessor.

Due to the weight of nearly 3 kg, I recommend that you limit holding the speaker with one hand continuously for long periods of time. Instead, the manufacturer has included a very convenient shoulder strap. This wire combined with a smartly designed floating hook helps balance the speaker extremely well when we carry it on our shoulders to move, significantly reducing the feeling of being bulky or heavy.

Looks quite fashionable too... In terms of appearance, the version I experienced has familiar color options including traditional Black, Blue and Camo color scheme. The point I appreciate about this year's hardware is the stand area at the bottom of the speaker. The new improved design helps the speaker grip firmly and be placed extremely stably on flat tables. Even when I tried playing music with a lot of bass at high volume, the phenomenon of shaking or sliding of the speaker on the table hardly happened.

A very notable visual upgrade on this version is the ambient lighting system, also known as JBL Edge Light UI. This completely new LED strip surrounds both ends of the speaker, capable of moving rhythmically and changing color flexibly according to each song's melody or the listener's mood.

I can easily choose the lighting modes from soft lighting effects for chill working times, to bright, explosive light rhythms when partying with friends. Not stopping at beauty, this light strip also serves as a visual display interface.

Looking at the light signals, I can immediately recognize the power status, remaining battery capacity, Bluetooth connection status or Auracast multi-speaker connection system. During outdoor dinner parties, this light strip really works when it helps the surrounding space become much more lively and impressive.

Feel the sound quality: Deep bass and good control thanks to the new algorithm
Moving on to the core part which is sound quality. JBL Xtreme 5 has a changed hardware structure with a larger woofer, measuring 98 x 145 mm, combined with two 20 mm diameter tweeters and two passive bass reflexes at both ends.

In general, the overall sound quality of the speaker is balanced, detailed and performs extremely well with vibrant, high-energy music genres such as EDM, modern Pop or Rock. However, this speaker is not monotonous when handling pure voice content. When I switch to listening to podcasts or watching online review videos, Smart EQ Mode using AI technology will automatically recognize the nature of the content being played. From there, the speaker automatically fine-tunes the frequency bands in real time so that the host's voice becomes clearer and clearer, and when the music is switched back, the sound explodes with the same power.

A small but very important note for you when using this speaker is the difference in power between the two power modes. When I plug it in directly to use at home (AC mode), the speaker can expand its total capacity up to 130W, providing a fuller, more open and clearly louder sound space.

Meanwhile, if unplugged and running entirely on the built-in battery (Battery mode), the total output power of the speaker will be reduced to 90W to optimize energy. This difference can be detected with the naked ear, so if you need the most epic sound space for large parties at home, you should prioritize plugging in the power cord.

In addition, the speaker also supports high-quality music playback through the USB-C connection port, allowing Lossless audio streaming to fully reproduce every small detail of the music, as long as the music source from your application supports it.
Connectivity and accompanying technology utilities
JBL Xtreme 5 is equipped with the latest Bluetooth version 6.0 connection technology today. Regarding signal stability, I tested placing the speaker in the living room and holding the phone away, passing through separating walls or going out to the balcony, the music still played continuously, with absolutely no flickering or interruption. Audio latency when watching videos or playing games is also controlled very low and smoothly thanks to full support for popular to advanced encoding codecs including SBC, AAC and LC3.

Another technology feature that I find very interesting is Auracast. This feature allows me to quickly and unlimitedly connect this speaker to other JBL speaker lines that also support Auracast. You can pair two speakers of the same type to create a clear left-right stereo system, or link a group of speakers together to create a large wall of sound to fill large outdoor spaces. The rhythm synchronization between speakers when connected via Auracast is very accurate, there is no phenomenon of one speaker playing first and the other speaker playing later.

To control and personalize the device, I regularly access the JBL Portable application installed on the phone. Through this application, I can freely adjust the sound deeper with the 7-band Equalizer depending on my personal music taste, choose the display themes of the border light strip or quickly update new software versions for the speaker.

Realistic battery life, reverse charging and IP68 durability
In fact, when used at a moderate volume level for daily work combined with turning on the ambient light at a low level, I found that the usage time can comfortably last for many days. When the battery begins to run out, the Playtime Boost feature can be activated to help extend approximately 4 hours of playtime by optimizing and saving power.

Besides, the USB-C connection port on the speaker body not only does the charging task but also acts as a convenient backup charger (Powerbank). I tried using this port to reverse charge my phone with common output currents such as 5V/3A, 9V/2A or 11V/2A, the charging speed is relatively stable. When you need to recharge the battery for the speaker itself, using a fast charger with 20V/3A capacity will take about 3.5 hours to fully recharge the battery from a depleted state.

Finally, it's about durability. With high-end IP68 waterproof and dustproof protection standards, JBL Xtreme 5 appears extremely resilient against external environmental impacts. The sturdy outer shell combined with protective fabric helps the speaker operate normally even when exposed to water in the swimming pool, sand and dust on the beach, or subject to minor impacts and accidental drops during daily travel. Let me show you a few pictures of myself a little "tortured" for your eyes.

Quick comparison of specifications with its predecessor JBL Xtreme 4
To help you easily visualize the core changes in this new version, I have compiled a table comparing the main technical parameters based on actual experience:

Summary: Which needs is this speaker suitable for?
Overall, JBL Xtreme 5 is a comprehensive and quality upgrade. The speaker possesses clean sound quality, the ability to control the bass range very well even when operating at high volume levels, and comes with high durability to help users feel secure in long-term use.

My practical advice for you guys before spending money is that this speaker will be extremely suitable for those who have a comfortable financial level and are looking for an audio device with strong and durable capacity to listen to music every day at home or regularly take it to picnics and outdoor parties.

On the contrary, if your music listening needs are simpler, only need to listen in a small room or have a limited budget of less than 7 to 8 million VND, considering choosing the older version of Xtreme 4 or switching to compact, more accessible speakers such as JBL Charge 5 or Flip 6 will be a reasonable solution to help save costs while still ensuring a sufficient entertainment experience.
