Experience Savi 7: Boox Go 7 platform and Savi Vietnamese book store
For more than two weeks, every night I've tried a small test. I sat at the corner of my desk, the room lights were off, the device's backlight was at the lowest level, and read a book. During nearly an hour, I realized that my thumb never left the grip, nor did I need to touch the screen when the two physical buttons did a very good job of turning pages. That's one thing Savi 7 can do. I talk about that detail first because it summarizes the reading experience, which is what this device does best.
Those of you who follow Tinh Te probably know Savi 6 and Savi 6s, two e-readers that come with Savi's copyrighted Vietnamese book store. Savi 7 is the latest version, and this time with the hardware platform Boox Go 7, running Android 13 with full Google Play. This means that Savi 7 does not stop at being a pure reading device, but other features such as running applications, surfing the web, and basic notes all meet the needs of users.
Design and grip
Talking about the page turning button cluster, this is my favorite detail on the device. Savi 7 has brought a very good experience with clearer key travel and decisive feedback. But its real value does not lie in the feeling of clicking, but in the fact that your eyes do not have to leave the page. When turning a page by touching the screen, even for just half a second, the eyes still have to follow the hand, but with a physical button, that operation falls completely to the level of reflexes, you just need to press the button and the reading circuit is no longer cut off because of traditional operations. This is easiest to feel when you read a long content in many sessions, it contributes to bringing concentration much more than you think.
Finally, the back of the device is divided into two areas, the grip part bears the Boox logo and the rest, meticulously completed at each transition. The rough surface provides a real friction feeling, not rough but very grippy. Personally, I think this material choice speaks quite clearly about Boox's philosophy: they prioritize grip over shine when taking product photos. A shiny aluminum machine may look better on the table, but it will be more slippery in the hand after an hour of reading.
Screen and reading experience
Savi 7 uses a 7-inch monochrome E Ink Carta 1300 panel, with a resolution of 1680 x 1264, equivalent to 300 ppi. The number 300 ppi is noteworthy, because it is the same pixel density as printed books, and at this density the naked eye can no longer distinguish individual pixels at the edges of letters. In fact, the text displayed is smooth, sharp, and has good contrast, making reading long text books just like reading printed paper. With PDF documents, the machine handles gently, and when reading at night with the backlight, this is one of the most comfortable devices I have ever used. During the experience, I did not feel eye strain and the stillness of the E Ink screen created a state of concentration that a glowing screen does not have.
Savi e-book and its covers are very Vietnamese
This is probably a point that needs to be mentioned during the experience. The biggest difference between Savi 7 and a portable Boox Go 7 is that the Savi e-book library is integrated directly into the device. I personally like reading books, and I often buy them at foreign stores like Amazon because I can't find a good book store to experience. Savi e-book is a copyrighted Vietnamese ebook platform developed by Akishop, and the problem it solves is quite specific for me. In the past, Vietnamese people who bought a foreign e-reader often encountered the problem of not knowing where to get the book legally. As a result, you have to find the file yourself, convert the format yourself, copy it to your computer using a cable, and the whole process is annoying enough for many people to give up their newly rekindled reading habit. Savi e-book sets the goal for users to buy a device, log in and have books to read immediately.
The content on this platform is quite diverse, I see skills, business, self-help, education, novels, and includes both free and paid books. You can buy each book individually or use the VIP and Premium subscription packages, depending on how much you read.
What surprised me the most in this part was not the book store, but the wallpaper. Savi put in the camera some very Vietnamese photos: Uncle Mot on Fansipan peak with Savi 7, a dripping cup of filter coffee, a boy reading a book on the back of a buffalo with some quiet poetry in the late afternoon. At first glance, this seems like an extra decorative detail, but if you think about it carefully, that's not really the case. An e-reader spends most of its time on the table with the screen off and the wallpaper is what it sees most of the day. Boox makes the hardware, while Savi is probably the factor that breathes Vietnamese soul into this device and this detail is probably much more meaningful than any parameters that can be said about the device. And recently, Savi ebook Phase II has just been officially launched with a new version with a friendlier interface, easier to search for books, and importantly, the speed of surfing and turning pages in the application is faster than before so that you can easily find and read the content here. Furthermore, the new content security mechanism is an important factor to help you feel secure that the books you have purchased will be optimally managed. Savi 7 with Android 13
Besides the design and reading experience, the device has 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal memory and runs Android 13. These three numbers say more than their appearance. This configuration allows you to open a book reading application and a note taking or dictionary application in parallel, but when you return, the reading application will not be reloaded from the beginning, without losing the position of the page you are reading. On a device where each screen redraw takes time, not having to restart the app is much more valuable than on a phone. In addition, the 64GB capacity is enough to allow you to store thousands of books, from epub, mobi to even PDF for paper books or comics, which are image-heavy formats. Savi 7 is a walking library that you don't need to worry about storage capacity.
In addition, the integration of Android 13 with full Google Play allows you to download a number of applications for personal needs. Of course, this needs to be practical because this configuration is unlikely to allow you to perform heavy tasks like a tablet, but something as simple as taking notes, downloading the RSS app to read the morning news or surfing the web still meets the basic needs of displaying content and looking up quickly, but with dynamic content, E-Ink may encounter technological limits to be able to display like a normal device. In addition, one thing I really like about Boox's equipment in general and Savi's in particular is Boox Drop. It allows you to open BooxDrop on a personal computer that is sharing a Wi-Fi network, via an IP address and then simply drag and drop files so that the content automatically syncs with the reading device. This is a simple but convenient solution for those who have a personal library to synchronize easily. For me, this is a very good way to address user needs, not only new books but also old content that already exists without being too complicated or complicated.
Who is this machine for?
Savi 7 is best for people who read text books regularly, want a 7" device that fits in their hand, like physical page turn buttons, and most importantly, want to have copyrighted Vietnamese books available to read immediately instead of having to manage them themselves. If you have ever bought a book reader and then abandoned it because you were lazy to look for books and Vietnamese content, then this is the problem Savi solves.
On the contrary, there are a few groups that I think should be considered carefully. Those who need to draw or take intensive notes will find the 7-inch screen cramped, and the device itself is designed primarily for reading. Those familiar with the response speed of LCD tablets will take some time to get used to the delay of electronic ink, and not everyone can get used to it. For those who already have their own ebook library and don't need a book store, they can consider a pure Boox Go 7, because Savi's added value lies in the content.
After more than two weeks of use
Going back to what I said at the beginning of the article, that Savi 7 is located between a pure e-reader and a tablet. After a few weeks of use, Savi 7 is still basically a pure reading device but partly resembles a tablet and this is a deliberate choice. The hardware did a great job: bringing text to the screen crisply, placing the device comfortably in the hand, and allowing pages to be turned without having to think too much. The Android platform also expands useful features for you, but it will never be the main factor determining the experience. And the Savi e-book and its Fansipan covers, filter coffee, and the boy on the buffalo's back are what make this machine different from a pure Boox product. And really, the long-term value of Savi 7 or the next generations of Savi will not lie in the panel or the number of RAM, but in how much the Savi book store can grow, and how quickly their reading application can be completed.
