Vietnam is a pioneer in converting the new generation Internet

(Dan Tri) - In the process of developing national digital infrastructure, the new generation IPv6 Internet has become an essential foundation to promote digital transformation, develop digital government, digital economy and digital society.
Vietnam has quickly grasped global technology trends by implementing the national IPv6 roadmap since 2008 and successfully completing the Action Plan for the period 2011-2019.
This transformation is not simply a technical issue but also a requirement for innovation to deploy advanced technologies such as cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), 5G/6G and smart cities, thereby creating new values for the economy and society.

The period from 2020 to present has been marked by the Program to promote and support IPv6 conversion for state agencies in the period 2021-2025 (IPv6 for Gov).
The program is implemented in two steps. Specifically, the first phase (2021-2022) focuses on promulgating plans and converting electronic information portals and online public services. The next phase (2023-2025) aims to comprehensively transform network infrastructure and services to be ready for pure IPv6 operation (IPv6 only).
Sharing at the summary conference, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long commented that the Internet is now the infrastructure of the economy and all social activities. The IPv6 transition is inevitable, those who are slow will be slow to enter the future.
“IPv6 provides an environment and expands space that allows us to connect with the whole world, giving Vietnam space to develop in the digital environment, creating many new industries and new growth drivers.
Scientific and technological development, digital transformation, 5G, AI or innovation can only operate effectively when connected to the Internet. This is the role of IPv6", Deputy Minister Pham Duc Long shared.
Thanks to drastic direction, up to now, 73% of ministries, branches and localities have completed converting information portals and public service systems to IPv6. Training also achieved impressive results with 5,993 specialized officials from state agencies and businesses being trained on this technology.
These efforts have made Vietnam one of the world's leading countries with an IPv6 usage rate of 67.68%. According to Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC), our country is currently ranked 2nd in the ASEAN region and has maintained its position in the Top 10 globally for 5 consecutive years. Vietnam's Internet network recorded 95 million IPv6 subscribers, reaching a rate of 86% on both fiber optic (FTTH) and mobile infrastructure.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, Acting Director of Vietnam Internet Center (VNNIC), said that in the past 5 years, Vietnam has become a model for many countries to look to research and learn from experience in deploying IPv6 at the national level.
Looking to the future, Vietnam continues to be a pioneer in promulgating the IPv6 only conversion promotion program for the period 2026-2030 with the goal of bringing the usage rate to 90-100%, bringing the country into the group of 10-20 leading countries in the world.
Switching to pure IPv6 operation not only helps simplify network architecture and reduce operating costs, but also brings great environmental benefits when it comes to saving up to 30% of energy consumption.
"Converting IPv6 and deploying IPv6 only is an inevitable requirement that cannot be delayed, serving as a key driving force to develop a modern, synchronous and secure national digital infrastructure. Being proactive in building a roadmap and piloting new models such as IPv6 only for AI and IoT will be an important premise for Vietnam to make a breakthrough in the industrial Internet era, better serving people and businesses," said Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang.
