Samsung's brick-shaped folding device concept

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has just granted copyright to a strange design from Samsung. The device has an initial design as square as a brick, but when expanded, it will have a larger screen than the Galaxy Z Fold7.

According to the description in the filing, in the closed state, the device is a box-shaped block with a screen wrapped on many sides. When users need a larger workspace, the device provides two expansion mechanisms: it opens in a normal folding form, then continues to activate the rolling mechanism to stretch the panel into a complete tablet.

The technical drawing does not come with any specific size parameters, showing that this is just at the idea level of Samsung Display's screen research team, with no specific commercialization roadmap.

In fact, Samsung has realized bold ideas many times. The limited release of the three-fold phone model Galaxy Z TriFold quickly sold out early this year.

However, devices with unique designs are often niche products and have high prices, making them difficult to reach the masses. The main market trend is still the race to optimize thinness and weight for ease of carrying. A thick device with a screen exposed at every corner like the above will face a major barrier in terms of durability and practical holding experience.

However, according to PhoneArena, experts consider Samsung's continuous filing of strange patent applications to be a positive sign. Even though the brick-shaped device does not appear on store shelves, the core technical solutions on rolling mechanism and optimizing internal component space can completely be applied to upgrade the Galaxy Z Fold line in the future.
