All New BMW iX4 launched globally: 800V platform, 828km on 1 charge, most powerful up to 612 HP

The BMW iX4 is the next car model built on the Neue Klasse platform, after the iX3 and i3. Unlike its two brothers, the iX4 is a coupé SUV. The car still retains the minimalist design language of Neue Klasse, but is "reshaped" in a sportier and more personal direction, with design lines like Coupe sports cars. Under the skin, the iX4 shares the same platform as the iX3: 800V electrical system, 6th generation (Gen6) eDrive electric motor and completely new cylindrical cell battery. In the iX4 50 xDrive version, the 108.7 kWh battery pack gives a maximum range of 828 km (WLTP), 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. The car supports high-power DC charging of up to 400 kW, enough to go 387 km after just 10 minutes of charging. At the top of the product range is the iX4 M60 xDrive with 612 horsepower, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

Appearance

The front of the car is still the familiar "face" of Neue Klasse. The kidney grille and dual headlights blend into a single graphic block. The BMW logo is placed in the "valley" on the bonnet, right above the grille like most new generation BMW models at the moment. Thanks to the active spoiler and many aerodynamic tweaks, the iX4's wind resistance coefficient is only 0.23 Cd, slightly lower than the iX3.

Looking from the side, you can clearly see the coupé design of the iX4. The sloping rear roofline, long wheelbase and short front/rear overhangs create a sporty stance. A panoramic glass roof that extends most of the car's roof is equipped as standard. The gasket is hidden so the glass and body of the car are seamless with each other.

The car's dimensions Length x Width x Height are 4,782 mm x 1,895 mm x 1,595 mm, wheelbase length 2,897 mm, which means the length and width are equivalent to the iX3 but 40 mm lower. The rear luggage compartment has a capacity of 490 liters, increasing to 1,600 liters when folding the second row of seats. The front trunk has a capacity of 58 liters, just enough to store the charging cord. When installing an electric tow hook, the vehicle can tow a maximum trailer of 2,000 kg.

The rear of the car is the most impressive detail on the iX4. The car can be equipped with a large rear spoiler that extends from the rear glass, with integrated high-mounted brake lights. The taillights are slim, placed horizontally, each side consisting of two light strips that simulate the L shape as on previous BMW models. The BMW logo is also located in the "valley" between the two light clusters, symmetrical with the layout at the front of the car.

The M Sport package is standard equipment on all iX4 versions, including 20-inch M alloy wheels and M Sport brakes with blue-painted brake calipers. Customers can choose the largest 22-inch wheel. The exterior package with BMW Iconic Glow is optional (Illuminant Grille), adding adaptive headlights, Selective Beam anti-glare high beams and welcome lighting effects in three styles: Relaxed, Balanced and Excited.

Particularly, the iX4 M60 xDrive version applies the new M design language. The most visible identification point is the pair of M Yellow Lights, inspired by GT racing cars and the BMW M Hybrid V8 model. In addition, there is a black M Shadowline grille border, three-bar light strips reminiscent of M stripes, a separate M rear spoiler that helps increase downforce on the rear axle, a black diffuser and 21-inch wheels are standard equipment. When on sale, the iX4 has 9 exterior colors, including Eucalyptus Green, Fire Red and Polarized Gray. From March 2027, the car will be equipped with three additional Frozen matte paint colors.

Interior

The iX4's cockpit inherits the Panoramic iDrive system launched on the iX3, including four main components: Panoramic Vision screen, 17.9-inch central screen, 3D HUD (optional) and new steering wheel. Panoramic Vision projects information across the bottom of the windshield and completely replaces the traditional instrument cluster. The content on this screen remains clearly visible even when the driver wears polarized glasses.

The 17.9-inch central screen has a "free-cut" design similar to the iX3, placed on the dashboard and slightly tilted towards the driver according to BMW tradition. Matrix Backlight panel helps sharp images in all lighting conditions. Users can drag and drop up to 6 widgets from the center screen onto Panoramic Vision, and for the first time, large widgets are added for more prominent display. The BMW Operating System Twitter operating system is developed on the open source Android platform (AOSP) and is capable of long-term updates over the air. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant voice assistant is integrated with Amazon's Alexa+ AI technology so it can converse more naturally, without the need for fixed commands. This assistant can also learn Routines, for example turning on the steering wheel heater, seat heater and glass drying every winter morning. Regarding entertainment, the car has video viewing applications, Amazon Prime Video, gaming via AirConsole and cloud gaming Boosteroid. Video can only be played when the car is parked.

Standard electric seats with memory position. M Sport seats have massage and a glowing M logo on the headrest, standard equipment on the M60 xDrive and optional for the remaining versions. The interior is available in seven color and material options, from faux leather Veganza to Merino leather in the BMW Individual package. Seats upholstered in Econeer recycled fabric are also on the options list.

Despite its coupé design, the iX4 still takes advantage of its electric vehicle platform. Long wheelbase for optimal legroom in both rows of seats. According to BMW, the roof line has been calculated so that rear passengers still have comfortable ceiling space. Transmission system

All iX4 versions come in all-wheel drive configuration, with an electric motor at each axle. The rear axle uses an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM), without the need for rare earth permanent magnets. The front axle uses a compact asynchronous motor (ASM), made only from iron and aluminum. Compared to the previous generation, this combination reduces energy waste by 40%, weight by 10% and production costs by 20%.

Power versions

iX4 40 xDrive: 374 horsepower, 520 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, maximum speed 200 km/h. 82.6 kWh battery for a maximum range of 638 km (WLTP). DC charging maximum 300 kW, travel 301 km after 10 minutes of charging.

The new battery pack uses cylindrical cells measuring 46 x 95 mm, with 20% higher energy density than previous generation prismatic cells. The cells are integrated directly into the battery block (cell-to-pack). The battery block itself also acts as a pack-to-open-body, helping to both reduce weight and increase the torsional rigidity of the vehicle body. In addition, the car supports two-way charging with full V2L features (powering external devices, maximum 3.7 kW), V2H and V2G.

Like the iX3, the Heart of Joy "super brain" coordinates the entire powertrain, braking, energy regeneration and steering, with a processing speed 10 times faster than the old system. In 98% of everyday braking situations, the vehicle only uses regenerative braking without the need for friction braking. The Soft Stop feature helps the vehicle stop completely without jerking or making noise. The suspension system includes a double-strut front axle and a 5-point multi-link rear axle. The M60 is equipped with standard Adaptive M adaptive suspension, M Sport electronic anti-slip differential on the rear axle and two separate driving modes: M Sport and M Sport Plus.

Regarding driving assistance, the iX4 meets SAE Level 2 standards with the BMW Symbiotic Drive philosophy. The driver can actively steer, accelerate or brake without the assistance system being disconnected. Motorway Assistant allows hands-free driving on highways at speeds up to 130 km/h in 21 countries, and automatically changes lanes when the driver confirms with his eyes. From 2027, vehicles will support semi-autonomous driving in urban areas, starting in Germany. iX4 is produced at Debrecen factory (Hungary), the same place as iX3.
