Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale: Unique manual transmission V12 supercar in an unprecedented way

Ferrari has just introduced the 12Cilindri Manuale, a special edition of the 12Cilindri model, marking the return of the manual shift lever on a modern supercar. This is not a "revival" of the traditional mechanical gearbox, but a completely new system developed by Ferrari itself, called Manuale By-Wire. Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale is limited to 1,499 units globally, countries with distributors (including Vietnam) can place orders for this car model. Basically, the car retains the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that has been highly appreciated on recent Ferrari models. What's changed is how the driver interacts with it. Instead of a gear shift lever behind the steering wheel, the car is equipped with a real mechanical gear lever and an electronically controlled clutch pedal (clutch-by-wire). The driver steps on the clutch, flicks the gear lever through the familiar six-speed gear shift gate, and all those operations are converted into electronic signals that control the rear DCT gearbox. In other words, the feeling of shifting manually is real, but the mechanism behind it is completely different from a classic manual transmission.

The interesting point is that this system is fine-tuned to almost exactly reproduce the feeling of a real manual transmission: there is a certain inertia when entering gear, there is a characteristic resistance at each level, and if the driver steps on the clutch or enters the gear incorrectly, the car can completely jerk or stall like a traditional manual transmission car. Ferrari also arranged a mechanical locking mechanism, not allowing gear changes if the clutch is not pressed correctly or the selected gear is not appropriate. The entire mechanical assembly that handles this weighs less than 3.5kg, is machined from a solid block of metal, and even the sound emitted when shifting gears is individually cared for by the company. When you do not want to use the manual transmission, the driver can still switch the car to automatic mode at any time, letting the DCT gearbox operate as normal, suitable for daily travel.

In terms of power, the 12Cilindri Manuale still uses the familiar 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine from the 12Cilindri version, producing a maximum capacity of 830 horsepower and a maximum rpm of up to 9,500 rpm. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in about 3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of more than 340 km/h. With an engine with a high rpm range and sensitive throttle response, the combination with manual gearshift operation promises to bring a more proactive and emotional driving experience than just flicking the lever behind the steering wheel.

In terms of identity, the Manuale version has a number of unique details to distinguish it from the standard version: pinstripe border on the front bumper and rear spoiler inspired by the classic Ferrari 365 GTB4, laser engraved badge on the side of the car, custom designed forged wheels, and door sills engraved with the 12Cilindri Manuale logo. Inside, the center console area has been redesigned to accommodate the new gear lever and pedal cluster, while the seats have Comfort or Racing options with six vertical seam patterns, symbolizing the car's six gears. Customers can also personalize their car under Ferrari's Tailor Made program, from paint color, leather material, to individual finishing details.

Ferrari also applies a 7-year extended maintenance program for this model, including all periodic maintenance costs for the first 7 years of use, applied at the entire genuine dealer system in the world. It can be said that 12Cilindri Manuale is a rather strange choice in the context of the auto industry gradually eliminating manual transmissions. But for Ferrari, this is like a statement: modern technology can still serve the pure driving pleasure, instead of replacing it completely. See more:
